Let me tell you a little bit about us.
Skin Fx is owned and operated by John and Amy Anderson. John, better known by his clients as Turkey, is a Georgia native and a Veteran of the United States Air Force. He is a Combat Veteran from Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Amy was born and raised in Louisiana. They have been married since 2012. From the time they met in 2009, John shared his dream of owning his own tattoo studio. He had been tattooing for 15+ years, but always working for other people. In mid-2017, they made this dream a reality opening Skin Fx Tattoo Studio. Their first location was at 206 Old Bastrop Road, in the Lakeshore area of Monroe, La. It was a small 800 square foot unit, but perfect for them at the time.
In 2019, Adam “Birdie” Bethea joined the crew, bringing 25+ years of experience. And we soon discovered that we needed more room. Mid-2019 we moved down the sidewalk to 214 Old Bastrop Road. In a little less than 5 weeks, we remodeled the 2400 square foot wide-open space with 3 tattoo booths, a piercing room, large lobby area. March 2020 saw the beginning of the pandemic, and a 45 day closure. The future of Skin Fx was uncertain, but we were determined to make it happen. And happen it did.
Fall of 2020 we added a young artist, Ethan Garsee, to our crew under the mentorship of Birdie. It wasn’t long before he proved he has the right stuff and by 2021 he was a fully licensed artist. In late 2021, after adding a piercer to the mix, we were starting to feel cramped.
February 2022 brought the discovery of an opening just down the street. After much prayer, number crunching, late night discussions and even more prayer, we decided to take the plunge and move down the street to 8205 DeSiard Street. A goal was set to move into the new studio in 12 days. With the help of our amazing Skin Fx family (aka the best clients in the world), we were able to prepare the new building, load the whole studio up, unload it and set everything up in 12 days, without missing an appointment. It was a task none of us ever want to have to repeat, but we did it!
February 15th, 2022, we opened in our new 3400 square foot studio where we are located today. There have been other artists, piercers and staff that have worked with us throughout the years, that have moved on, but they all have played a part in our growth. The most recent addition has been Amber, coming in as an apprentice under Turkey. While working through her apprenticeship, she has also become the backbone of the front counter, filling an important support role to the entire crew.
Anyone who hangs around the studio will eventually see “The Boss”, aka Ryder. She is Turkey and Amy’s granddaughter, only one of 14 grandchildren. She will tell you quick she is the boss. In late 2023, their son, Ryder’s daddy, Toney, joined the crew helping out with anything that needed to be done. When we say Skin Fx is a big family, we mean it. Our commitment to providing good quality artwork at an affordable price, with amazing customer service is what we believe has helped us grow over the years. We always say, you come as a client, you leave as family and friends. In the words of the infamous Paul Harvey, “now you know, the rest of the story”.
